The habit of listening without distraction
Launch library · evergreen read

Giving a song full, undivided attention, without a phone, a task or a conversation competing for focus at the same time, allows details to surface that background listening will almost always end up missing entirely without a listener even realising it, a discipline that grows easier the more often it is deliberately practised.
This particular kind of focused listening can feel genuinely unfamiliar at first, since so much daily listening happens alongside other activities, but it quickly reveals just how much genuine texture a song actually contains once given room to be heard properly, a texture that background listening, however pleasant, simply never quite manages to reveal fully.
Setting aside even a few minutes occasionally for this deeper kind of attention can meaningfully change a listener's whole relationship with music, turning already familiar songs into something considerably richer than simple background sound playing in another room, sound that had, until that point, simply been passing by mostly unnoticed in the background.
