Listening for the bassline first

Focusing deliberately on the bassline, rather than the more obvious lead vocal melody sitting on top, reveals just how much rhythmic and harmonic work is genuinely happening beneath a song's surface at any given moment throughout the track, work that a lead vocal, however compelling, was quietly built on top of the whole time.
This particular exercise can be surprisingly difficult at first, since attention naturally gravitates toward the lead vocal almost automatically, but it becomes considerably easier with repeated, deliberate practice carried out across a fairly wide range of different songs, chosen specifically because their basslines sit clearly enough to be followed without much effort.
Once a listener can reliably isolate the bass this way, it often becomes genuinely impossible to ignore again afterward, adding a wholly new dimension to how even very familiar songs end up being experienced from that point onward, a shift in attention that rarely, if ever, fully reverses itself once it has properly taken hold.
