A playlist that spans several different decades needs a connecting thread well beyond simple chronology alone, whether that thread is theme, tempo or mood, so that the songs still feel genuinely curated rather than simply arranged loosely according to when each one happened to be released, a thread strong enough to survive the very different production styles each era brings.
Production differences across decades can create fairly jarring transitions if they are not managed carefully during sequencing, so the ordering itself often matters even more here than it would within a playlist drawn from a single, more sonically consistent period of time, since the ear notices those production shifts even when it cannot name them.
Done well, a cross decade playlist can genuinely highlight how certain musical ideas persist stubbornly over time, letting listeners hear clear, sometimes surprising connections between songs that were otherwise released many, many years apart from one another entirely, a pattern that becomes far easier to hear once it has been pointed out.
