An unexpected song, placed carefully within an otherwise fairly predictable playlist, can create a genuinely memorable moment for the listener, precisely because it briefly interrupts the settled pattern they had already grown comfortably used to across the earlier part of the set, a moment memorable precisely because the rest of the set behaves so predictably.
This particular technique works best when the surprise still shares some underlying quality with the rest of the collection, whether mood, tempo or theme, so that it reads clearly as a deliberate choice rather than as an outright, jarring mismatch within the set, a shared quality that keeps the surprise from feeling like a genuine mistake.
Used too often, though, the technique quickly loses its power entirely, and a playlist genuinely needs enough underlying consistency for any single surprise to properly register as one rather than simply blending into a generally unpredictable, scattered collection of songs, overuse turns a deliberate device into simply another unpredictable pattern.
