What defines indie music today

Indie originally described how a record was made rather than how it actually sounded, referring to artists working outside major label systems and their commercial expectations. That independence encouraged genuine experimentation, since there was far less pressure to chase an obvious, already proven commercial formula of any kind.
Over time indie came to suggest a certain sonic character too, understated production, guitars carrying a slightly unpolished edge and vocals that favour honesty over showmanship. The small imperfections are often left in deliberately, treated as part of the charm rather than something needing correction in the mix.
What still unites the genre today is a preference for intimacy over spectacle. Indie songs tend to sound like they were made in a room a listener could actually imagine standing inside, which is precisely the effect so many people are drawn to when they seek the label out deliberately, rather than stumbling onto it by accident.
