Drum and bass is built around fast, intricate rhythm patterns paired with a deep, prominent bassline, a combination that demands considerable precision from producers working at an unusually high tempo throughout the entire track from its very first beat to its last, with almost no margin left for error anywhere.
Programming rather than live performance usually shapes the genre's percussion, allowing for rhythmic complexity that would be extremely difficult for a human drummer to replicate by hand, giving the drums an almost mechanical, razor sharp exactness across the whole arrangement and every transition within it, second by second, bar by bar.
Despite the speed, the genre often carries real emotional depth underneath, layering atmospheric pads or melodic elements over the rhythm section so that intensity and mood genuinely coexist rather than one simply overwhelming the other entirely across the track, from the opening pattern right through to the final drop.
