Music has moved through several quite distinct physical and digital formats over time, with each shift changing not just how listeners actually accessed music but also how they came to experience and value individual recordings within their collection, a distinction that shaped not just access but the entire ritual of listening itself.
Physical formats generally encouraged deliberate, focused listening, since obtaining and playing a record required real effort on the listener's part, while digital and streaming formats have instead made access instant but arguably rather less deliberate as a direct result, a trade off between effort and convenience that keeps resurfacing throughout the format's history.
Each format shift has also changed how music itself gets made, with artists adapting their songwriting and production choices to suit the listening habits that each new available technology tends to encourage among its own particular audience, a cycle repeated with almost every major shift in the underlying technology.
