Styling a video around an era
Launch library · evergreen read

Era specific styling, whether through particular silhouettes, distinctive textures or a carefully chosen colour palette, can instantly transport a video into a recognisable time period without needing a single line of explanatory dialogue or on screen text to spell it out for the viewer, a shorthand audiences absorb almost instantly, without needing it spelled out.
This technique works so well because audiences already carry shared visual associations with different periods in their heads, so a few carefully chosen details can evoke an entire aesthetic considerably more efficiently than elaborate set design ever really could manage on its own within a short video, borrowing from a collective visual memory the audience already carries with them.
When handled thoughtfully, era styling also creates a genuinely productive tension with a contemporary song, letting familiar sounds feel newly interesting when they are deliberately paired with a visual language borrowed from an entirely different, earlier time altogether across the length of the piece, a tension that keeps the styling from feeling like straightforward imitation.
