Crafting a playlist for a long drive
Launch library · evergreen read

A long drive playlist needs a rather different kind of pacing than a shorter one might, considering not just individual songs in isolation but how energy should rise and fall gradually across an extended stretch of time spent largely staring at the same unchanging road ahead, a very different discipline from building a set meant to last only minutes.
Variety becomes genuinely essential here, since repetition in tempo or mood can make an already long journey feel considerably longer still, while thoughtful, well judged contrast keeps attention gently engaged without ever demanding the kind of constant, active focus a shorter listening session might comfortably allow, especially once the scenery outside has stopped changing very much at all.
Familiarity also matters more on longer drives than it perhaps would elsewhere, and including songs the listener already knows well can provide real comfort and steady rhythm, letting attention drift naturally toward the road itself rather than toward each new, unfamiliar track arriving one after another, rather than leaving every single track entirely unfamiliar and demanding close attention.
